Comares

Comares - Castle on High

The Moorish village of Comares, with its picturesque white houses and narrow streets, is built upon a rocky ridge high above the surrounding countryside, offering a commanding position that has made it a sought-after defensive position for centuries. Occupied by the Romans, and extensively by the Moors, this village is full of character and is historically interesting.

The Via Ferrata’s are on the northern face, above the olive and almond groves that drop quickly to the riverbed below. During the climbing we are treated to a spectacular panorama stretching from EL Torcal in the west, across the mountains that comprise the Central Limestone Arch, and finally glimpsing the Pass of Zafarraya and the imposing western flank of La Maroma.

The three climbs are graded from K1 to K3, and so we start with the K1 Fuente Gorda. For those who have not climbed a Via Ferrata before this makes a great introduction, as it predominantly leans into the rock, and gives you a taste of what to expect from our second climb.

With your confidence buoyed from the first climb we will move on to the K2 Cueva de le Ventana. This climb starts and finishes with an overhanging section of rock, so some upper body strength is required. Once past the initial overhang the route has a mix of horizontal and vertical sections, including a short passageway through the rock.

Our last climb is the K3 Puerta del Agua, an exciting mix of overhangs, Tibetan and mono bridges, and a great feeling of exposure on the rock. You will need to use your upper body more on this climb, as changing over the lanyard will often be one-handed!

Once completed, and if you would like, we will take a short tour of the village and grab some refreshments in one of the café bars.

To complete all three climbs, including the briefing and refreshment breaks, is between 3 to 4 hours.

We can climb here every day of the week, from January to June, and September to December.

Cost is €47.50 per person (minimum booking of two)

Let’s go!

As these routes do have a differing level of physical effort please look at the grading system to ensure that you, and any members of your group, are comfortable to do them. There are no specific age restrictions for the Via Ferrata although we would suggest that due to the height of the steps and guidewires, children should be able to reach to xxx cms.

Prior to starting you will be required to complete a liability disclaimer (copy here).

What is included

Included in your guided Via Ferrata is all the equipment that you will require to complete it safely, which includes a helmet, gloves, harness, and safety lanyards. All equipment is cleaned and disinfected prior to being reissued. We will also have available some refreshments for in-between, or at the end of the climbs.

We will advise on any specific clothing you will need for the conditions on the day although we recommend, as a minimum, a pair of trainers for your footwear.

"Phil was a great guide. We really would recommend the via ferrata in Comares with Active Andalus. After the 3 routes via ferrata we went for a drink and Phil also gave us a little guided tour in Comares."

"I'd never done anything like this before so it was a bit daunting looking up the cliff face but Phil was an excellent guide we felt very safe."

Via Ferrata
"The via ferrata were the highlight of the trip, a mix of straight forward and simple to some moderate ones .......  but with the good kit and techniques supplied they are well worth the effort and give a real sense of achievement fun and adventure."

"Another day we climbed a Via Ferrata into our favourite town, Comares, with Phil and Simone providing the essential kit and ensuring we were safe. We were all chuffed to have competed it. The tapas afterwards were well deserved!"
